The Cynthia Moodie Bess Award is a not-for-profit corporation named after its founder Cynthia Moodie Bess.
An immigrant from Trench Town, Jamaica, Ms. Bess raised 3 children in Canada. To her children and those around her, she constantly stressed the importance of education. She is famous for reciting an old Jamaican poem,
“Labour for learning before you grow old. For learning is better than silver or gold. Silver or gold will vanish away. But a good education shall never decay.”
The not-for-profit corporation provides scholarships for the youth from disadvantaged circumstances who have been accepted into their first year of college or university.
